Who is responsible for ensuring that these items are packed really? Keep these tips in mind when you travel with children:

  • Pack lots of snacks. Many books and magazine articles that tell parents you need to make fresh fruit. However, if your children do not eat fresh fruit on the kitchen table, makes you think they will wrap the bag of grapes in the back seat of the car? Ask your children what they would like to bring snacks. Of course, parents' opinions are used here, especially when a child for anything other than junk food requested. Depending on the length of the trip, some M & M's, mixed perhaps not a bad idea with some trail mix.
  • Create a personalized art kit. You know your child better than anyone. Why, then, to say the books, parents continue to hang on to talk about what junior busy? They say things like, "hold pencils, coloring books and paper to me for hours." Nonsense. If Junior is not a fan of coloring, it will not be interested in the new box of crayons. Instead, create a custom art kit. Take a shoebox and fill it with things your child likes to do. If it pencils, that's fine. But if they prefer colored pencils, or markers of these scented magic, use this instead. Add to that a pair of safety scissors, glue stick, a few old magazines and a small notebook, and now your child has everything they need to make an album.
  •  Books on tape or CD can be a real lifesaver, especially for long trips. Take your children with you in the bookstore and let them help you make your choice. Or visit your local library, where they borrow the words free. Sometimes, listening to a tape for only 15 or 20 minutes to an hour is better than trying to force everyone to hear for an hour or more. Stop the tape after 15 minutes, and then ask children to write or draw what they heard. It will forward to something, as they await the next episode of history.
  •  Take time to plan your adventure and you will soon discover that traveling with kids can be a rewarding experience!

Make sue you carry enough water with you to replace the fluids you are losing as you hike, so on hotter days pack more water. A good rule of thumb would be to pack 1oz of water for every pound of body weight for hikes that would take you 5-7 miles at approximately 80-88 degrees Fahrenheit. Use this general rule to pack more or less water depending on length and temp. It is a good idea to drink some water before heading out and to leave some in your car or base camp for when you return to reduce you load while hiking

Try to eat a variety of complex carbs 2 or more hours before hiking for sustained energy. Good sources of sustained carbs include oatmeal, brown rice, and the like. Eat fruits 1 hour or closer to the time of hiking for good sources of vitamins as well as quicker burning carbs for instant energy. It would be a good idea to take apples or some other fruit that does not spoil in the heat and eat them during a break for sustained energy. Protein is important for muscle regeneration after a long day of hiking so make sure to include that in your post hike as well as pre-hike rituals. You want to take high energy items that are light and easy to carry without refrigeration.

With all the talk of electrolytes these days it is easy to get into drinking sports drinks and overloading on sugars that are associated with them, Salty items that digest a little slower would be of benefit, such as trail mix and beef jerky, as the salt in these items will help retain water. You can also buy vitamin packs that will help you sustain your energy as you hike which include electrolytes and can be mixed with water.

Lowering Weight

To lower weight on longer hikes dried fruit as well as a water purifier would be worth looking into, however if you are going on a new hike or are in warmer climates and are not sure of the water supply in the area always pack more water then you think you need. Better to carry a couple extra pounds then to die of dehydration.

There are five routes to the summit, and hiking is also open to children from ten years. However for all ages, sufficient time is required for acclimatization to high altitudes. We must also take into account the large temperature amplitudes between the foot of the mountain and its summit, where there could possibly range from thirty to thirty-three degrees minimum during the day and at least fifteen or twenty degrees below zero at sunset. Of course, the temperatures decline as we approach the summit. These temperature variations are important and are therefore to be considered in choosing the period of ascent and in the choice of the guide.

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro can be done at all times of the year. However, the rains should be avoided for obvious practical reasons. The risk of rain falls is frequent because of the slippery and the rain can surprise hikers at any stage. This can be a real handicap on some roads and the camp where the tents replace the deposits. There are two rainy seasons, the first is between late March and mid June, and the other from October to late November. The season of tours from June to October is controversial. While the weather is good but the trails are crowded and therefore the houses are often full. For those seeking tranquility and escape, this is not the best time. Choice of Route To Climb Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro consists of three extinct volcanoes. The highest of them and which is most talked about today is the Uhuru Peak. To achieve this peak, two of the five roads leading to it are the usual routes charged by trekkers. The roads are Marangu Road, often known as Cola Road (a brand of soft drink), and the Machame Road, also known by the term Whisky Road. The three other roads, Shira Road, Rongai Umbwe Road and Road are less crowded because more technically challenging or more remote access from Tanzania. The Marangu route is the easiest and fastest with five days of climbing. It is also more convenient and more comfortable because it is the only one that can be housed in shelters, all other channels can not be achieved in tents. The Machame route, although a bit more difficult to climb, offers spectacular scenery, it also offers an extra day of climbing, giving you more time to acclimatize.

What preparation before the big climb?

You just decide to climb the slopes of Kilimanjaro? Before you embark on this mythical climb, you must carefully prepare your material kits, financially, and of course, physically. The first step of the material preparation is to seek for information from your country of departure, the different offers available. As mentioned above, there may be more interesting to go through a tour operator who will offer you a kit and take care of all practical. This organization will offer the overall service including the booking of airline tickets, rental of tents and guide you through your choice of trekking materials. This is a big advantage especially if this is the first time and you do not speak English well.

It is important to have a quality coaching, and the choice of the agency should not be done lightly, because it is sort of guarantee of a successful stay. On the other hand, it is this agency that is standing to be your recourse if something goes wrong. All this support has a cost. You must therefore be financially prepared. Prices vary according to whether the rate if for a group or not, whether it includes the variation of price rise or not, whether it includes airfare or not and whether it includes tourist taxes or not. The best is yet to visit various sites dedicated to providing a minimum climb of two thousand USD. Finally, we must not neglect the physical preparation. For people who are are not familiar with their local hiking trails, there are many resources that provide help. One of the best resources is the Internet. Try searching for hiking or hiking trails and the name of the city. City government websites also usually have useful resources. There should be a list of trails available online or over the phone through the Parks and Recreation department of the local government, or some other related department.

How to choose amongst the offerings

When choosing where to go hiking, gauge the abilities of the family members who will be participating. Many online sites listing hiking trails will describe how difficult the hike is and have reviews from people who have been on those hikes. For people not used to hiking, start with an easy hike. The easiest hikes tend to be shorter than two miles, with very little change in elevation.

For families with young children, stick to hikes less than one mile long. For very young children, be prepared to carry them, or choose a trail that is stroller accessible. For people who are planning to hike frequently with very young children, there are backpacks for carrying children that can be very helpful.

The Seven Summits Mountaineering Challenge

The Seven Summits is a term known to all mountain climbers. They are the highest mountains of each of the seven continents. This mountaineering challenge was first mentioned in the 1980s by Richard Bass. There are different definitions of what the seven summits are based on continental borders and number of continents. However the seven summit number of seven continents is based on the continents used by Western Europe, United States and Australia.

The first peak in dispute is the Oceania summit. The highest mountain on the Australian mainland is Mount Kosciuiszko at 2,228 meters. The highest mountain in the Australian continent is Puncak jaya at 4,884 meters in New Guinea. This mountain is also known as Carstensz Pyramid. There is a debate that Mount Wilhelm at 4,509 meters should be the highest peak in Oceania as Indonesia is part of Asia. This mountain is in the Bismarck Range of Papua New Guinea.

The next peak of dispute is the European summit. The highest mountain in Europe is Mount Elbrus at 5,642 meters. It is in the Caucasus range that forms the border between Asia and Europe. Since it does form the border, its inclusion in the seven summits list is disputed. The highest mountain in Europe without dispute is Mont Blanc at 4,810 meters on the border of France and Italy.

There are two common seven summit lists in use today, the Bass and Messner lists. The first seven summit list produced by Bass used the highest mountain of mainland Australia, but Reinhold Messner made another list using Puncak Jaya as the highest Oceania summit. But neither list includes Mont Blanc as the European summit. Most mountaineers agree that Messner's list is the true seven summit list as it is the more challenging one and sticks to the ideals of a true mountain climber as the Oceania mount that Bass uses is an easy hike to the top unlike ascending the Carstensz Pyramid.

The seven summit list according to Messner is Kilimanjaro at 5,892 meters on the African continent in the country of Tanzania. The first successful ascent was in 1889. Next is Vinson Massif at 4,892 meters on Antarctica and was successfully ascended in 1966. Carstensz Pyramid at 4,884 meters on the Australia continent in Indonesia was first successfully ascended in 1962. Everest at 8,848 meters on Asia in Nepal and China was first summitted in 1953. Elbrus at 5,642 meters on Europe in Russia was summitted in 1829. Mount McKinley at 6,194 meters on North America in the United States was summitted in 1913. Aconcagua at 6,962 meters on the South American continent in Argentina was first ascended successfully in 1897.
